Abstract
This paper presents a unified framework for nervous system regulation, energy management, and the cultivation of sovereignty—the state of being resistant to extraction and capable of sustained well-being. The framework integrates two complementary dimensions: (1) a hypothetical Sovereign Energy Model that distinguishes between extraction-based (zero-sum, depleting) and integrity-based (positive-sum, generative) energy economies, and (2) a practical, evidence-supported Sovereign Stillness Protocol, a home-based intervention combining sensory reduction and transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS).
Drawing on systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and physiological studies, the paper demonstrates that each component of the protocol independently contributes to stress reduction, improved sleep quality, and enhanced heart rate variability (HRV). The sequential combination of a “dry float” followed by taVNS is proposed as a synergistic intervention that leverages a window of neuroplasticity to consolidate autonomic gains.
Mathematical formulations are presented as theoretical constructs intended to guide future empirical validation. The protocol itself is positioned as a hypothesis-driven, evidence-informed framework for self-regulation and experimental application.

1. Introduction
Human variability in resilience, recovery, and sustained vitality remains insufficiently explained by existing psychological and physiological models. Individuals exposed to similar stressors demonstrate markedly different trajectories: some regenerate rapidly, while others accumulate chronic depletion [1,2].
This paper proposes that such divergence can be understood through an integrated model of energy generation, conservation, and depletion, combined with practical interventions targeting the autonomic nervous system.
Two components are introduced:
- The Sovereign Energy Model (SEM) — a theoretical framework describing how energy is generated, stored, depleted, and converted within human systems.
- The Sovereign Stillness Protocol (SSP) — a practical intervention designed to reduce energy expenditure, enhance parasympathetic activation, and increase regenerative capacity.
The central hypothesis is that chronic activation of the default mode network (DMN) and sympathetic nervous system creates a persistent energetic deficit [3,4]. Interventions that reduce DMN activity and increase parasympathetic tone enable a transition toward a net-generative physiological state [5,6].
2. The Sovereign Energy Model (SEM)
2.1 Core Variables
The SEM introduces five primary variables [7,8]:

2.2 The Core Inequality
A system is considered sovereign (net-generative) when:

- CGE_converted = energy successfully retained after generation
- DF = ongoing energetic losses
When this inequality holds, stored energy increases over time [11]. When it fails, the system enters deficit mode, drawing down reserves [12].

This distinction aligns with research on Dark Triad personality traits and exploitative behavior patterns [13,14], as well as positive psychology frameworks of vitality and self-determination [7,15].
2.4 Conservation Principle
Energy available for storage:

Stillness reduces E_expended, increasing net storage [16,17]. This principle is supported by research on the metabolic costs of DMN activity and the energy-sparing effects of sensory reduction [3,4,18].
3. The Default Mode Network (DMN)
The DMN is associated with:
- Self-referential thinking
- Rumination
- Mind-wandering
It consumes substantial metabolic energy even at rest [3,4].
Key Insight: “Rest” without stillness is not true rest [19].
Reducing DMN activity:
- Decreases cognitive load
- Frees metabolic resources
- Improves emotional regulation [5,6,20]
Mindfulness training and Floatation-REST have both been shown to reduce DMN connectivity [5,6,21,22]. A 2025 review on mindfulness-based neurofeedback found consistent evidence of decreased DMN activations during practice [6].
4. The Sovereign Stillness Protocol (SSP)
4.1 Overview
The SSP is a home-based approximation of Floatation-REST [23], consisting of:
- Zero-gravity posture (or supine position)
- Weighted blanket
- Eye mask
- Earplugs
This combination creates a “dry float” environment [24,25].

4.3 Weighted Blankets

Optimal weight: ~10% body weight [35].
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of nine studies involving 553 psychiatric patients found that weighted blankets significantly reduced anxiety symptoms (SMD = −0.47, 95% CI: −0.68 to −0.25, p < 0.001) [35,36]. A 2024 pilot RCT found improved sleep quality among adults with insomnia [28]. A 2020 RCT reported reduced insomnia severity and improved daytime activity after four weeks of weighted blanket use [27].
4.4 Zero-Gravity Position

A 2025 study of 150 participants found that zero-gravity alignment significantly improved spinal loading, circulation, breathing efficiency, and comfort [29]. ZG chairs have been validated as a feasible alternative to tilt-tables for HRV measurement [30].
4.5 Sensory Occlusion
Eye masks + earplugs [24,25,37]:

- Support transition into deep stillness
Complete occlusion of visual and auditory input is a core feature of traditional Floatation-REST [23,24].
4.6 The Dry Float State

This sequence aligns with DMN deactivation and reintegration [5,6,22].
5. Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS)
5.1 Mechanism
taVNS stimulates the vagus nerve via the ear, producing [39,40,41]:

- Reduced stress response
5.2 Evidence Summary

A 2025 randomized crossover controlled trial found that taVNS safely enhances overall HRV [42]. A 2025 narrative review concluded that taVNS regulates brain activity, motor functions, and autonomic nervous system activity [43]. A 2023 study found that repeated taVNS sessions induced “higher parasympathetic activation and cardiac flexibility” [44].

This sequential approach is supported by research on vagus nerve stimulation and sleep, which shows that taVNS improves objective sleep structure [45] and that vagal activation during sleep enhances restorative processes [46,47].

11. Conclusion
The Sovereign Stillness Protocol represents a low-cost, scalable intervention for improving nervous system regulation and energy sustainability [23,24,25,40,45].
