While this model has enabled analytical precision, it is increasingly associated with <strong>cognitive load, affective dysregulation, and perceived disconnection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This paper advances a complementary framework: <strong>relational ontology<\/strong>, in which self and world are experienced as dynamically interdependent rather than fundamentally separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We integrate three domains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rastafarian \u201cI-and-I\u201d<\/strong> as a linguistic and phenomenological dissolution of dualism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lakota and broader Indigenous ontologies<\/strong> extending personhood and agency beyond the human<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flow state research<\/strong>, demonstrating that peak performance coincides with reduced self-referential processing and action\u2013awareness merging<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We propose that shifting from <strong>subject\u2013object (extractive)<\/strong> to <strong>subject\u2013subject (relational)<\/strong> modes of cognition reduces self-referential processing, lowers cognitive load, and increases performance efficiency and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paper concludes with testable predictions, institutional implications, and practical methods for cultivating relational cognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. This orientation underpins modern science, economics, and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, converging evidence suggests this model may carry <strong>systemic psychological costs<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>elevated self-referential rumination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduced perceived belonging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increased stress reactivity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Neuroscientific research links excessive self-referential processing to <strong>default mode network (DMN) dominance<\/strong>, associated with anxiety and depression (Raichle, 2015; Andrews-Hanna et al., 2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In parallel, Indigenous and contemplative traditions have long articulated <strong>non-dual or relational models of selfhood<\/strong>, in which identity emerges through relationship rather than separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thesis:<\/strong><br>A shift from subject\u2013object to relational cognition reduces self-referential load and enables more efficient, adaptive, and integrated modes of functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Relational Ontology in Indigenous and Linguistic Systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.1 Rastafari: \u201cI-and-I\u201d as Cognitive Reframing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI-and-I\u201d collapses the grammatical separation between subject and object. Entities typically categorized as \u201cobjects\u201d in Western ontology\u2014animals, weather systems, stones\u2014are treated as <strong>subjects within a relational field<\/strong> (Posthumus, 2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Central is <em>wak\u02be\u0105\u0301<\/em>: a pervasive, relational potency. Vine Deloria Jr. describes reality as <strong>energetic and experiential rather than inert and mechanical<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This ontology implies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cognition is relational, not isolated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>agency is distributed, not centralized<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>interaction is reciprocal, not extractive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.3 Ontological Conflict and Integration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts to integrate Indigenous knowledge into Western frameworks often fail because they operate at the level of <strong>content<\/strong>, not <strong>ontology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As noted in recent interdisciplinary work (Wilson, 2026), meaningful integration requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>not inclusion within existing models, but transformation of the models themselves<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This paper treats relational ontology not as cultural artifact, but as <strong>an alternative cognitive operating system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.
