This paper introduces a conceptual distinction between <strong>automated responding<\/strong>\u2014a state characterised by habitual cognition, stress reactivity, and role-based behaviour\u2014and <strong>self-regulated presence<\/strong>, defined as a mode of functioning involving increased autonomic regulation, attentional flexibility, and alignment between internal states and external behaviour. Drawing on literature related to the default mode network (DMN), autonomic regulation (including polyvagal-informed models), emotional labour, and post-traumatic adaptation, the paper proposes an integrative framework for understanding transitions between these modes. Practical implications are discussed in relation to stress regulation, behavioural awareness, and boundary formation. However, under conditions of chronic stress or high environmental demand, these automatic processes may become <strong>rigid, overgeneralised, or maladaptive<\/strong> (McEwen, 2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This paper uses the term <strong>automated responding<\/strong> to describe a pattern of functioning in which behaviour is primarily guided by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>learned scripts and habitual responses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rapid emotional reactivity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sustained physiological arousal or fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>externally reinforced role expectations (Goffman, 1959; Hochschild, 1983)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This state is not pathological in itself; it represents a <strong>continuum of normal human functioning<\/strong>.
