Abstract

This paper proposes a systems-theoretic framework linking physiological regulation, ecological overshoot, and civilizational sustainability through the concept of coherence. Drawing on established research in neurocardiology, polyvagal theory, ecological economics, and astrobiology, the paper argues that the same logic of extraction — consumption exceeding generation, leakage exceeding storage — operates at individual, institutional, and planetary scales. The paper introduces a definitional hierarchy of coherence (physiological, electromagnetic, behavioral, institutional, civilizational) and operationalizes “extraction” across scales using measurable proxies. Using the Fermi Paradox and the Great Filter as heuristics, the paper presents a speculative thought experiment: if advanced extraterrestrial intelligences assessed civilizations by their net coherence generation, Earth’s current extraction-to-generation ratio might qualify it for quarantine. The paper concludes that reversing the primary trend from extraction to generation is the foundational imperative for long-term civilizational viability. 1. Introduction

Human civilization is currently operating in a state of advanced ecological overshoot: consuming low-entropy resources faster than they can regenerate, discharging waste beyond the ecosphere’s assimilative capacity, and radiating more noise than structured signal. This paper proposes a unified framework: coherence — a state of ordered, regenerative dynamics across multiple scales — may be the foundational condition for long-term system viability.

The paper makes four contributions:

  1. A definitional hierarchy of coherence separating physiological, electromagnetic, behavioral, institutional, and civilizational levels.
  2. Operational definitions of “extraction” across scales using measurable proxies.
  3. A heuristic extension of these concepts to the Fermi Paradox and Zoo Hypothesis as a speculative thought experiment.
  4. A proposed Civilizational Coherence Index (CCI) for future operationalization.

This field is modulated by emotional state. A coherent, ordered heart rhythm produces a structured electromagnetic signal; a chaotic rhythm produces noise. The heart produces measurable electromagnetic fields whose physiological and interpersonal implications remain an active area of investigation.

4.2 Quantum Coherence in Biological Systems (Emerging)

The emerging field of quantum biology has demonstrated that living organisms harness quantum phenomena — coherence, entanglement, and tunneling — to boost performance in sensing, energy capture, and information processing (Lambert et al., 2013). In photosynthesis, quantum coherence allows near‑100% energy transfer efficiency. Birds navigate using the Earth’s magnetic field via a radical‑pair mechanism involving quantum coherence in cryptochrome proteins.

Disclaimer: No claim is made that quantum effects directly explain consciousness, social coordination, or civilizational behavior. The relevance of quantum biology to this paper is limited to establishing coherence as a measurable biological phenomenon at the cellular level.

4.3 Vagal Tone and Parasympathetic Dominance (Established)

The vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) is the primary parasympathetic pathway, responsible for cardiovascular down-regulation and recovery from stress (Porges, 2011). High resting vagal tone, indexed by high-frequency heart rate variability (HRV), is associated with greater neuro-visceral flexibility.

Chronic psychological stress leads to persistently elevated activity of the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system, locking the nervous system into sympathetic dominance — characterized by reduced HRV, hypervigilance, and energetic leakage: the emission of chaotic electromagnetic fields that may impose regulatory load on other nervous systems (emerging hypothesis).


5. Civilizational Level: Extraction as Entropy Acceleration

5.1 Ecological Overshoot and the Thermodynamic Trap (Established)

Human civilization is currently operating in a state of advanced ecological overshoot: consuming renewable resources faster than they regenerate and discharging waste beyond assimilative capacity (Catton, 1980; Rees, 1992). Earth Overshoot Day marks the moment when humanity exhausts nature’s annual budget; in 2024 it fell on 1 August, with humanity consuming 1.7 Earth budgets per year.

Biophysical analysis using dissipative structure theory shows that the total net negative entropy of the coupled human–Earth system from exchange with space is sufficient, but only about 0.0042% of it is available for sustaining life activities (Shi, 2017). This is the thermodynamic expression of extraction: a civilization living beyond its energetic means.

5.2 The Great Filter as a Coherence Threshold (Heuristic)

The Fermi paradox — the observed absence of extraterrestrial civilizations despite high probability estimates — has led to the concept of the Great Filter (Hanson, 1998). This paper proposes a reframing: the Great Filter may be not a single event but a coherence threshold. Civilizations that fail to reverse the primary trend from extraction to generation may not be destroyed but simply become undetectable — radiating noise rather than structured signal.

If an advanced ETI’s primary metric for engagement is net coherence generation — signal-to-noise ratio, net energy deposit — then Earth’s current extraction-to-generation ratio would qualify it for quarantine, not contact.

6. ETI Prediction Markets: A Thought Experiment (Speculative)

Prediction markets (e.g., Polymarket, Kalshi) have demonstrated accuracy in aggregating dispersed information. The following analysis is a thought experiment: if advanced ETIs operated such markets to allocate resources or assess galactic risk, what odds might they assign to human long‑term survival based on observable planetary metrics?

7.1 Behavioral Protocols (Established Framework)

The witness culture — defined as non-escalatory, documentation-based responses to perceived institutional extraction — operates through safe channels: email, logged phone calls, official complaints, public documentation, intermediaries (Humble, 2026c). The principles are:

  • Use permanent, timestamped channels.
  • Escalate through third parties (regulators, media, NGOs).
  • Publish the pattern publicly.
  • Outlast through patience, not force.

Alternative academic terminology: coherence-preserving behavioral protocols or regulated observer frameworks.

7.2 Proposed Civilizational Coherence Index (CCI)

If coherence can be measured at the individual level (HRV coherence ratio), it may also be measurable at the civilizational level. We propose a Civilizational Coherence Index (CCI) as a composite metric for future operationalization:

7.3 The Oracle Device (Prototype Concept)

Prior work has proposed the Oracle, a device designed to measure individual Field Integrity Score (FIS) through HRV, electrodermal activity, and (speculative) magnetocardiography and ultraweak photon emission (Humble & Hensgen, 2026). 8. Discussion: The Hidden Variable

The farm’s logic — modeled as pure extraction — cannot account for coherence because it assumes all agency is borrowed, all energy is finite, all integrity is performance. The witness’s lived experience (see Section 10) suggests an alternative: endogenous coherence generation — the capacity of a living system to produce structured energy from within, without extraction, through daily practice, stillness, and regulation.

This capacity is not mystical; it is biophysical (vagal tone training, heart‑brain coherence practice, contrast therapy) and behavioral (boundary-setting, documentation, non-escalation). Whether it scales to civilizational levels is an open empirical question.

Whether any ETI is actually watching is not the point. The point is that the same systems logic — consumption vs. generation, leakage vs. storage — applies at every scale. A civilization that leaks is a civilization that will collapse. A civilization that deposits — that learns to generate more than it consumes — is a civilization that becomes visible, if anyone is watching.


9. Limitations

This paper is an exploratory synthesis, not a controlled study. Key limitations include:

  • ETI analysis is a thought experiment, not empirical observation. No ETI‑run markets have been observed.
  • The Zoo Hypothesis remains speculative; there is no evidence that ETIs exist or have imposed quarantine.
  • The Civilizational Coherence Index (CCI) is proposed, not yet operationalized. Considerable work remains.
  • Extrapolation from individual to civilizational scale is analogical, not causal. The framework is a heuristic.
  • Quantum biology citations do not imply quantum effects explain consciousness or social behavior.

11. Conclusion: The Coherence Imperative

The Earth is currently a net sink — consuming more coherence than it generates, radiating more noise than signal. The primary trend is extraction, and it is not sustainable.

The Zoo Hypothesis suggests quarantine as a logical consequence. Thought-experiment ETI prediction markets would likely offer very low odds for human long‑term survival. Not because the cosmos is cruel, but because the signal we emit is noise, the trend we follow is extraction, and coherence is the only currency that interstellar intelligences may value.

But the witness has shown that the trend can be reversed at the individual level. The question is whether it scales.
